REVIEW THE METAL OBSERVER:

France is one of the most thriving countries for Black Metal nowadays, with bands like DEATHSPELL OMEGA and MÜTIILATION dominating the European underground. However, these bands are already well-established entities in the Metal sphere, and unlike Norwegian bands their nationality alone doesn't assure a cult status. This makes it hard for young bands like DAEDALION to break through, and thus, their debut full-length "Sainte Folie – Erige Un Empire", has a difficult challenge ahead of it.

On their official site DAEDALION cites SATYRICON, DISSECTION, and ENTHRONED as their main influences, which makes for an interesting premise. These influences tend to shine through at times, but they still manage to keep a fine balance between the different elements. There are melodic parts aplenty, but there always seems to be a nice and brutal follow up to whip it into shape and keep it from drifting too far away from its Black Metal roots. There are some parts with obvious folk touches reminiscent of SATYRICON's earlier work, and the ambient track "Exil" actually sounds like a mix of MORTIIS and LORD WIND. Other songs, most notably "Erige Un Empire", lean towards an almost catchy melodic epicness, a definitive nod to DISSECTION.

Production-wise there isn't much to complain about, as all the instruments can be heard loud and clear, and even the bass gets a chance to shine. The vocals are vicious enough, and the French lyrics work effectively towards the overall mood, which could best be described as cold and unrelenting. All of the songs pack a punch in their own way, ensuring a very vibrant experience that grows on you as it progresses. In other words, DAEDALION stomps on the monotonous dullness of their competitors with steel-capped army boots, leaving them choking on their own bile. The album closer, "Cassum Ex-Cathedra" wraps it all up with a riff whose greatness will be haunting me for weeks, encouraging me to listen to it several times.

For a debut album, "Sainte Folie – Erige Un Empire" consists of impressively strong material. In over 50 minutes there doesn't seem to be any filler material, and the band doesn't compromise to a single style. With songwriting like this it shouldn't be a problem to tear through the veil of the French underground, and DAEDALION proves that they are a force to be reckoned with.

NECROMETAL ZINE (8.5/10):

One of things that made this promo stand out is the band's purpose to remain true to it;s national identity since all lyrics and vocalization are done in French and not in the standard international English language that most bands within the genre follow as norm.
On to the music at hand... While the Scandinavian influence of re known artists like (old) Satyricon and melodic riffing in the style of Dissection is present, the music presents multifaceted classical compositions, thrash instrumentals and a musical ability which to me makes me think of past works by Rotting Christ and Enthroned (more so in the faster blast parts)- You most listen to the track 'Les Mots de Skuld' to appreciate this well done blend. While there are plenty of velocity meets melodic riffing here, I think it is the production that makes me likes this CD, for example, the drums do sound like drums, no overdubs, no triggering of any sort. This is a performance given with plenty of heart and balls.
